Darfur on Google Earth
I’ve been always hearing about Darfur from the media but it never really got my attention before. Perhaps because it’s so far away or maybe because we see poor African kids on charity commercials one too many times, I’m not quite sure but today, it hit me quite differently. Earlier today, I finally found some time to install Google Earth on my computer and somehow my mouse clicks led me to Sudan.

When I zoomed in to Darfur area, Google had already placed icons and presentations to inform about the Darfur crisis including countless tiny icons of fire over areas burnt by the attackers. As if the number of fire icons all over the map wasn’t shocking enough, I was able to zoom in all the way and actually view the village that has been burnt down as if I was looking at my neighborhood. I gotta say the impact is definitely greater when you see it closer, from a bird eye view. Download Google Earth at earth.google.com and see if you experience anything different. If you’d like to help, you can go to www.savedarfur.org to find out what you can do. If you’re not in position to help, you can still do something. Be thankful, and spread the word.
